YA Authors’ Summer Reads

Author Summer Reads

Although I try to spend time with my author friends year-round, summer is usually the season when we’re all off doing our own things. I recently got in touch with some friends to ask them what they’ve been reading.

(Note: most of these links take you to the Goodreads page for each book.)

Helene Dunbar, author of Boomerang, just read Melissa Albert’s The Hazel Wood. “Creepy and beautiful, I couldn’t put it down.”

Veronica Rossi, author of Under the Never Sky, is listening to Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer. “Amazing audio, amazing book in general.”

Carissa Andrews, author of Oracle, read Lynne McTaggart’s nonfiction book The Power of Eight.

Donna Cooner, author of Screenshot, just finished two books, Robin Benway’s Far from the Tree and Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects. “Both were very good.”

Talia Vance, author of Silver, read Rachel Hawkins’s Royals. “I just love her voice and sense of humor. Great beach read.”

Katherine Longshore, author of Gilt, is loving This is Going to Hurt, by Adam Kay. “It’s an account of his time as a junior doctor in the National Health Service Maternity and labor wards. Not exactly designed for a YA readership, but fascinating, and hilarious and grim and wonderful.”

I’m re-reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone! If summer treats me well, I might even re-read the entire Harry Potter series. For some weird reason, I teared up in Chapter One when Dumbledore and McGonagall were talking about Harry’s parents dying. I don’t think I’ve read the entire series since reading the final book (although I’ve read Books 1-6 several times), so it was like coming full-circle, all over again, and seeing all the set-up that Rowling has done throughout the earlier books.

What are you reading? Did you get some good ideas for your TBR list from these authors’ summer reads?
